Karlsaue

Combined, the two immediately adjacent parks Karlsaue and Feldaue are among the largest inner-city parks and one of the most extensive park-like leisure areas in Germany. This is where the German horticultural show was held in 1955 and 1981.

Since 1996, Karlsaue has been home to a unique walking route that turns those walking it into globetrotters: a type of “map of the universe” that brings the distances and sizes of the planets down to a scale of roughly one to one billion. This puts the enormous distances and differences in size of the planets that are visible from Earth into easily understandable perspective.

Landgrave Karl (1654-1730) had the starting point of the baroque axes constructed in the park surrounding the orangery castle as a summer home and a place for Mediterranean tub plants to stay over the winter.

This island was created in 1729 following the digging of the basin Schwaneninsel. The island was ornamented with several smaller artificial vista hills before these were removed in the early 19th century. At this time, the small island was naturally modelled and planted in line with the landscaped garden.
