History of the hotel

As early as 1767, a well-known inn stood on the site of today's Schlosshotel. Time and again, Germany's history was reflected here in its central location.

Around 1826, Elector Wilhelm II ordered its demolition to make room for a larger inn (with numerous hotel rooms, a dining room for 300 people and a stable).

In 1827, Elector Wilhelm II was the builder of a new hotel in the immediate vicinity of his Wilhelmshöhe Palace.

From about 1850 to 1899, the hotel was run by hotelier Carl Schombardt and then leased to Adolf Stecker, who ran it as the "Grand Hôtel Wilhelmshöhe".

April 1930: Opening of three new eastern terraces for up to 1,200 visitors, redesigned by architect Heinrich Tessenow (1876-1950, one of the great architects of the 20th century) on behalf of tenant Adolf Strecker.

Soon 100 years later, Hindenburg organized the withdrawal and disbandment of German troops after World War I at the Schlosshotel Bad Wilhelmshöhe.

Destroyed in World War II, the hotel was rebuilt as a new building according to plans by architect Paul Bode in 1955.

On May 21, 1970, the hotel hosted the inner-German talks between Chancellor Willy Brandt and the Prime Minister of the GDR, Willy Stoph. Renovation of the Schlosshotel: the hotel gets "a new look" and is adapted to the "needs of the time".

2008 Start of the new design of the Schlosshotel: tendering of an architectural competition with the aim of achieving an "optimal planning result in functional, design and economic terms".

March 2009 Result of the competition: the architect Ohlmeier prevailed. The plan was to build 150 rooms using the existing building fabric, and to add a wellness area, a conference center and an underground parking garage.
